The VA funding fee in Texas
The VA funding fee is a one-time charge paid to VA that keeps the home loan program running. It’s a percentage of the loan amount, and most Texas buyers roll it into the loan instead of paying it at closing. The fee depends on the loan type, whether you’ve used your VA benefit before, and, on a purchase or construction loan, your down payment.
Plenty of Texas veterans don’t pay it at all. If you receive VA disability compensation at any rating, you’re exempt, and so are Purple Heart recipients on active duty and surviving spouses who receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation. If you have a disability claim pending, mention it when you apply.
The funding fee is one of a handful of costs at closing. For the rest, see upfront closing costs to expect and the VA funding fee guide. To see how the fee changes your payment, use the VA home loan calculator.
